About Hamilton Douglas Halyburton

His Early Life

Hamilton Douglas Halyburton was born on October 10, 1763. His father was Sholto Douglas, 15th Earl of Morton. This means Hamilton came from an important family in Britain.

His Tragic Death

Lieutenant Halyburton died on December 31, 1783. He was in charge of a small boat, called a barge. This barge belonged to a larger ship, HMS Assistance. He was chasing after sailors who had left their ship without permission.

While they were off the coast of Sandy Hook, New Jersey, a terrible winter storm hit. Lieutenant Halyburton and his entire crew were caught in the storm. Sadly, they all died. The next day, almost all of their bodies washed ashore. People described them as "12 gentlemen and one common sailor."

The Halyburton Memorial

A Monument's History

After Hamilton's death, Katherine Hamilton, who was the Countess Dowager of Morton, had a monument built for him. This first memorial was later destroyed by the French.

Many years later, in 1908, the grave was found again. This happened while a road was being made bigger.

The New Memorial

In 1937, a new Halyburton Memorial was built. This monument stands today at Sandy Hook, New Jersey. It helps people remember Lieutenant Hamilton Douglas Halyburton and his crew.
