History of Hamilton Place

How Hamilton Place Got Its Name

Hamilton Place gets its name from the Hamilton family. They used to live in this area a long time ago.

Early Buildings and Land Leases

During a time in English history called the Interregnum (when England didn't have a king), the first buildings started to appear in this area. After the king returned to power, the land was rented out.

James Hamilton rented the land from the King. He was an officer in the British Army and worked for King Charles II. He was also the Hyde Park Ranger, which meant he looked after Hyde Park. After James Hamilton passed away in 1673, his wife Elizabeth renewed the lease for 99 years in 1692. This helped the area grow and become the important street it is today.
