What Was the Hamitic League of the World?
The Hamitic League of the World wanted to inspire African Americans with new hope. They wanted everyone in the Black community to be openly proud of their race. The League believed that Black people had made great contributions to human history and civilization. They also claimed that the Black race was one of the most important races the world had ever known.
The word Hamitic comes from the name Ham. Ham was a son of Noah in the Old Testament of the Bible.
Who Started the League?
The organization was founded in 1917 by George Wells Parker. He was a key figure in starting the Hamitic League.
In 1918, the League published a booklet written by Parker called Children of the Sun. Around the same time, Cyril Briggs became the editor of their magazine, The Crusader. This magazine later became the official journal for another important group called the African Blood Brotherhood.
