Discovering Hamodava's Beginnings
Herbert Henry Howard Booth was an officer in The Salvation Army. He was also the son of its co-founder, William Booth. Herbert was put in charge of The Salvation Army's work in Australia and New Zealand.
In 1897, Herbert Booth started the Hamodava Tea Company. He worked with Ashley Lamb to create a way to earn money for The Salvation Army's important work. Ashley Lamb brought tea from Sri Lanka. He then mixed and packed it to sell in Melbourne.
Expanding the Product Line
The tea company was very successful. So, two years later, Hamodava added new products. They started selling cocoa and coffee. The Hamodava Tea Company kept selling its products until 1929.
At that time, the price of tea around the world dropped a lot. Also, a big economic problem called the Great Depression began. Because of these challenges, the company had to close down.
The Meaning of Hamodava
The name "Hamodava" comes from a word in the Sinhalese language. Sinhalese is spoken in Sri Lanka. The word "Hamodava" means 'army'.
This company was a leader in fair trade practices. They made sure to pay a good price to the farmers who grew their products. They even created a plan to help farmers buy their own farms from The Salvation Army.

In September 2016, The Salvation Army brought Hamodava back to life. Today, it is also used as a community center.
