Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hampden South is a lively neighborhood located in the big city of Denver, Colorado, in the United States. It's a place where many families live and enjoy the outdoors.

Discovering Hampden South's Past

Long ago, in the 1860s, a man named Rufus Clark owned much of the land that is now Hampden South. He was a "homesteader," meaning he settled on and farmed the land. Rufus Clark became quite successful by growing and selling potatoes. Many people were coming to the area hoping to find gold, and they needed food!

In the 1960s, the City of Denver officially took over this land. This process is called "annexation." After this, Hampden South quickly grew into a suburban neighborhood. This means it became a place with many homes, often with yards, away from the very busy city center.

Homes and Green Spaces

Today, Hampden South is known for its homes built in the 1960s and 1970s. These houses often sit on larger pieces of land compared to many other parts of Denver.

The neighborhood is also a great place for outdoor fun! It has three big parks:

  • Southmoor Park
  • Rosamond Park
  • Eastmoor Park

Just to the east of Hampden South, you'll find the large and beautiful Cherry Creek State Park. This park offers even more space for adventures, like hiking, biking, and enjoying nature.
