A Special Building in Auckland
Hampton Court is an old apartment building located in Auckland, New Zealand. It was designed by a very talented architect named Surrey S. Alleman. He was quite young, only 29 years old, when he created this building.
Award-Winning Design
Surrey S. Alleman won a major award for his design. He received the NZIA Gold Medal in 1930. This award showed how impressive his work was. The plans for the building were first announced in 1929. It was estimated to cost about 42,000 pounds to build back then.
From Homes to Offices and Back
Hampton Court first opened its doors in 1931. It was originally built as apartments where people could live. Later, in the late 1950s, the building changed. It was converted into offices, and a ninth floor was added.
In 1995, Hampton Court changed again. It was renovated and turned back into apartments. This means people could live there once more.
A Special Place During World War II
During World War II, Hampton Court played a unique role. It hosted a nightclub that was a welcoming place for African American servicemen. These soldiers were on leave from the US Army. At that time, some places in Auckland were not open to them.
The club was known as the American Negro Club. It featured jazz groups performing live music. It provided a place where these servicemen could relax and enjoy themselves.
