Hampton Pool is a special heated outdoor swimming pool in Hampton, part of London. What makes it unique is that it's open every single day of the year! A group called YMCA St Paul’s Group helps manage it.
What is Hampton Pool?
Hampton Pool is a large outdoor swimming area. It is known as a lido, which is a public outdoor swimming pool. The main pool is 36 metres long and 14 metres wide. It even has two fun slides!
There is also a smaller, separate pool for children. This kids' pool is 12 metres long and 7 metres wide. Besides the pools, you can find a gym and a fitness studio. There is also a cafeteria where you can grab a snack or a drink.
The Hampton Pool Trust, which is a registered charity, runs the pool. They are a "not for profit" group, meaning they use any money they make to improve the pool. The Trust also organizes summer outdoor concerts to help raise money.
History of Hampton Pool
The idea for Hampton Pool started a long time ago. Plans for the pool were approved in 1914. However, building was delayed because of the First World War. The lido finally opened its doors in 1922.
Over the years, the pool was improved several times. In 1939, a diving area and a water cleaning system were added. More improvements came in 1961. The pool was made wider, and new buildings and a car park were built.
In 1980, the local council decided to close the pool. They said it was too expensive to keep open. But the local community loved the pool and wanted to save it! They started a big campaign and raised over £60,000. Because of their hard work, Hampton Pool reopened in 1985. A new company, Hampton Pool Ltd, was created by the community group to manage the pool.
