The Hang is a unique musical instrument that was created in Switzerland. It's known for its beautiful, calming sounds. The word "Hang" means "hand" in the local dialect of Bern, Switzerland, which is where it was invented.
The Hang is part of the idiophone family of instruments. This means it makes sound primarily by vibrating its whole body, without needing strings, membranes, or air. Think of a triangle or a xylophone – they are also idiophones!

What is the Hang Instrument?
The Hang was invented by two talented people, Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer, in the year 2000. They live in Bern, Switzerland. They spent many years studying different musical instruments from around the world, especially steelpans and ghatams, which are clay drums. Their research helped them create the Hang.
Why is it Called Hang, Not Hang Drum?
Sometimes, people mistakenly call the Hang a "hang drum." However, the inventors, Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer, prefer that it not be called a drum. They see the Hang as a unique instrument that is more than just a drum. It's designed to be played with the hands and fingers, creating melodic and harmonic sounds, not just rhythmic beats.
How is the Hang Made?
The Hang is made from two half-shells of steel, which are glued together. The top shell, called the "Ding" side, has a central note and a circle of seven or eight "tone fields" around it. These tone fields are hammered into the metal and produce different musical notes when played. The bottom shell, called the "Gu" side, has a small opening that acts as a Helmholtz resonator. This means it helps to amplify the sound and create a deeper, resonant tone.
Playing the Hang Instrument
Playing the Hang is usually done by hand. Musicians use their fingertips, thumbs, and palms to gently tap the different tone fields. This creates a wide range of sounds, from soft, bell-like tones to deeper, more percussive notes. The way the instrument is played allows for both melodies and rhythms to be created at the same time.
The Hang's Sound and Music
The sound of the Hang is often described as peaceful, warm, and ethereal. It's a very expressive instrument that can be used in many types of music. You might hear it in world music, new-age music, folk music, or even in film scores. Its unique sound makes it stand out and adds a special feeling to any song.
