A Building with Many Lives
From Saloon to Community Hub
The building started as a saloon. In 1981, the building was moved to the center of Hanna. This move was allowed by the Union Pacific Coal Company.
When a law called Prohibition started, it became illegal to sell alcohol. So, the building changed its purpose. It became a pool hall instead. John Thomas ran the pool hall for a while.
After John Thomas passed away in the 1920s, the building changed again. It became the small town's community center. This meant it was a place for everyone in Hanna to gather.
Renovations and New Beginnings
The building got a big update in 1931. The coal company helped pay for these improvements. For many years, it served as a central meeting place for the community.
Today, this historic building is the Hanna Basin Museum. It helps people learn about the history of Hanna and the surrounding area.
What the Building Looks Like
The Hanna Community Hall is located right in the middle of town. It is a one-story building. Its outside walls are covered with wood clapboards. The roof is shaped like a hip, meaning it slopes down on all four sides, and is covered with shingles.
At the back, there are two parts that stick out. These parts have pointed gable roofs. The windows are double-hung, with eight small panes of glass on the top and eight on the bottom. A small, decorative roof hangs over the main entrance. It has arched trim and is supported by brackets.
A Place of Historical Importance
The Hanna Community Hall is very important to the history of the area. Because of its long history and changes, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This happened on November 26, 1983. Being on this list means it is recognized as a special historical site.
