Hanna Schygulla (born 25 December 1943) is a famous German actress and singer. She is well known for her work with the film director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Hanna Schygulla started working with Fassbinder in 1965. She became an important part of the New German Cinema movement.

Schygulla won the 1979 Berlin Silver Bear for Best Actress. This was for her role in Fassbinder's film The Marriage of Maria Braun. She also won the 1983 Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for the film The Story of Piera.

Early Life of Hanna Schygulla

Hanna Schygulla was born in Königshütte. This place is now called Chorzów and is in Poland. Her parents, Antonie and Joseph Schygulla, were German. Her father was a timber merchant. He joined the German Army during the war. He was captured and held as a prisoner of war until 1948.

In 1945, Hanna and her mother became refugees. They moved to Munich after many German-speaking people left Königshütte. Later, in the 1960s, Schygulla studied Romance languages and German. At the same time, she took acting lessons in Munich.

Hanna Schygulla's Acting Career

Acting soon became Hanna Schygulla's main focus. She became very famous for her films with director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. They worked together on many movies. One of these was Effi Briest (1974). This film was based on a German novel by Theodor Fontane.

After some time apart, they worked together again on The Marriage of Maria Braun in 1978. This film was shown at the 29th Berlin International Film Festival. Hanna won the Silver Bear for Best Actress for her amazing acting in it. In 1980, she also appeared in Fassbinder's TV series Berlin Alexanderplatz.

Schygulla also starred with Bruno Ganz in Circle of Deceit (1981). She worked with Isabelle Huppert in Jean-Luc Godard's Passion (1982). In 1987, she was part of the jury at the 15th Moscow International Film Festival.

In the 1990s, Hanna Schygulla also started a career as a Chanson singer. A chanson is a type of French song. She performed several songs in a documentary film about Fassbinder in 1998.

Schygulla appeared in the film Werckmeister Harmonies (2000). She was also in The Edge of Heaven (2007). This film was directed by Fatih Akın. She also acted in Rosa von Praunheim's film Fassbinder's Women (2000).

In 2007, she received an Honorary Award from the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. In 2010, she received the Honorary Golden Bear from the Berlin Film Festival. She acted in the film Faust (2011). She also appeared in the French drama The Prayer (2018). This film was shown at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival.

Hanna Schygulla lived in Paris from 1981 until 2014. After that, she moved to Berlin.
