Hannah Clayson Smith is an American lawyer. She works with the law firm Schaerr Jaffe. She is also a senior fellow at the International Center for Law and Religion Studies at Brigham Young University (BYU). She helps lead the Religious Freedom Institute.

Hannah Smith grew up in California. She is the sister of Jane Clayson Johnson.
Education and Early Career
Hannah Smith studied at Princeton University. She earned a bachelor's degree there. After that, she went to law school at Brigham Young University (BYU). While in law school, she was a top student. She also helped edit the BYU Law Review.
Before becoming a lawyer, Hannah Smith served as a missionary. She was a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in Switzerland and France.
Working with Judges
After law school, Hannah Smith worked for important judges. She was a "law clerk" for Judge Samuel Alito. A law clerk helps a judge with their research and writing.
Later, she worked for Justice Clarence Thomas at the United States Supreme Court. This was from 2003 to 2004. She returned to the Supreme Court in 2006. She worked for Justice Alito again after he became a Supreme Court Justice.
