Hannibal Lokumbe (born Marvin Peterson on November 11, 1948) is an amazing American musician. He is famous for playing the trumpet and writing music, especially jazz. People sometimes just call him "Hannibal."

Musical Journey

Hannibal Lokumbe grew up in Smithville, Texas. He went to high school in Texas City. In the late 1960s, he studied at North Texas State University for two years. After that, he moved to New York City.

He started touring with the famous musician Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Hannibal also joined the Gil Evans orchestra, where he played for many years. He worked with other great musicians like Roy Haynes and Pharoah Sanders. As the leader of his own group, the Sunrise Orchestra, he played both the trumpet and a Japanese instrument called the koto. His very first solo album, Children of the Fire, came out in 1974.

Hannibal Lokumbe also helped write a book about his life. It's called Hannibal Lokumbe: Spiritual Soundscapes of Music, Life, and Liberation. This book was even nominated for a special award called the Pulitzer Prize in Biography! He has also written three books of poetry.
