Hannibal Lokumbe (born Marvin Peterson on November 11, 1948) is an American composer and jazz trumpeter. He is known for his powerful music and unique style.

Musical Journey
Hannibal Lokumbe grew up in Smithville, Texas. He went to high school in Texas City. After studying at North Texas State University for two years, he moved to New York City. There, he started touring with famous musicians like Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
He also joined the Gil Evans orchestra, which was a big part of his career for many years. He worked with other jazz legends such as Roy Haynes and Pharoah Sanders. As the leader of his own group, the Sunrise Orchestra, he played both the trumpet and the koto, a Japanese string instrument. His first solo album, Children of the Fire, came out in 1974.
Hannibal Lokumbe has also shared his life story in a book. He worked with author and artist Lauren Coyle Rosen on Hannibal Lokumbe: Spiritual Soundscapes of Music, Life, and Liberation. This book was published in 2024. It has been recognized with nominations for important awards like the Pulitzer Prize.
Besides music, Hannibal Lokumbe is also a poet. He has published three books of poetry. These include The Ripest of My Fruits, Trilogy: Freedom Dance Cycle, and Love Poems to God.
