Hans Hækkerup was an important Danish politician. He was born on December 3, 1945, and passed away on December 22, 2013. He was a member of the Danish parliament, called the Folketing, for the Social Democratic party. He also served as the Minister of Defence for Denmark from 1993 to 2000, working with Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen.
Early Life and Education
Hans Hækkerup was born in Frederiksberg, Denmark. His parents were also important politicians. His father, Per Hækkerup, was a Minister of Economy. His mother, Grete Hækkerup, was a Member of Parliament.
Hans finished high school in 1964. Later, in 1973, he earned a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Copenhagen.
Political Career
After finishing his studies, Hækkerup worked in different government departments. In 1979, he was elected to the Folketing, which is the Danish parliament.
While in parliament, he was part of several important groups. He was involved in committees that looked at Danish security, affairs related to Greenland, and foreign policy. From 1991 to 1993, he was the leader of the Defense Committee.
Minister of Defence
From 1993 to 2000, Hans Hækkerup served as the Minister of Defence for Denmark. During this time, Denmark became more involved in international military efforts. For example, Denmark participated in NATO's military actions in Yugoslavia in 1999.
After being the Minister of Defence, he took on a special role. From January to December 2001, he was the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Kosovo. This meant he helped lead efforts to build peace and stability in Kosovo.
Later Work
After his time in government, Hækkerup continued to work in important areas. He became a research director at the Royal Danish Defence College. There, he focused on studying China. He also led the Danish Defence Commission from 2008 to 2009.
Personal Life
Hans Hækkerup was married twice. His first wife was Lisa Hækkerup. In 2011, he was living in Mexico. His second wife, Susanne Rumohr Hækkerup, was the Danish ambassador there. Hans had five sons.
Sadly, Hans Hækkerup passed away on December 22, 2013.
