Hans Anders Rausing (born March 25, 1926 – died August 30, 2019) was a very successful Swedish businessman. He was also a philanthropist, which means he gave a lot of money to help good causes. He lived in the United Kingdom for many years.
Hans Rausing became rich from his share of Tetra Pak. This company was started by his father, Ruben Rausing. Tetra Pak is now the biggest company in the world that makes food packaging. In the early 1980s, Hans Rausing moved to the United Kingdom. Later, in 1995, he sold his part of the company to his brother, Gad.
Hans Rausing was known as one of the richest people in the world. In 2011, his family's wealth was estimated to be about $10 billion. By the time he passed away in 2019, his family's wealth was estimated at $12 billion.
Early Life and Education
Hans Rausing was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1926. He was the second son of Ruben Rausing, who was also a businessman. His mother was Elisabeth Varenius. Hans had two brothers, Gad and Sven.
He went to Lund University to study. He learned about economics, statistics, and the Russian language. He finished his studies in 1948.
Leading Tetra Pak
In 1954, Hans Rausing became the managing director of Tetra Pak. His brother Gad was the deputy managing director. Hans later became the chairman of the company in 1985. He left Tetra Pak in 1993. Two years later, in 1995, he sold his 50% share of the company to his brother Gad.
Many people believe that Hans and Gad Rausing were key to Tetra Pak's huge success. They helped turn their father's small business into a giant company. It grew from just six people to a multinational company.
Hans Rausing also became an expert on Russia. He made many investments in Russia and Ukraine. He was in charge of Tetra Pak's business in Russia. In 1959, he helped sell the first Tetra Pak machine to the Soviet Union. Because of his work, Tetra Pak became the largest foreign employer in Russia.
Helping Others: Philanthropy
Hans Rausing and his wife, Märit, gave a lot of money to charities. They supported research in both the UK and Sweden. They helped fund big medical research projects at places like Karolinska Institutet and Lund University.
They also had a special fund called the Märit and Hans Rausing Fund. This fund helped local community projects in their home area of Sussex in the UK.
Hans Rausing's daughter, Lisbet, also continues their family's tradition of giving. Through her own fund, Arcadia, she supports many important projects. These include the Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Project. This project helps to save languages that are at risk of disappearing. She also supports history of science studies at different universities.

Hans Rausing was married to Märit Rausing. They had three children together. Their two daughters are named Lisbet and Sigrid. They also had one son, Hans Kristian Rausing.
Hans Rausing lived in the United Kingdom from 1982 until he passed away. He lived at a place called Wadhurst Park in East Sussex. He died on August 30, 2019.
