Hansjörg Göritz (born June 5, 1959) is a well-known German-American architect, professor, and designer. He creates buildings that are pure and simple, focusing on how light, space, and materials make a place feel. His work often highlights the importance of the building's location and its connection to the environment.

In 1996, he won a major award in Germany called the Development Award Baukunst, part of the Kunstpreis Berlin. This was for his early and impressive architectural designs. Later, in 2013, he was honored as an Affiliated Fellow at the American Academy in Rome, which is a big deal for artists and scholars.

About Hansjörg Göritz

Hansjörg Göritz was born in Hannover, West Germany. He grew up in a traditional area called Lower Saxony, where his father worked as a mason (someone who builds with stone or brick).

After finishing high school, Hansjörg trained as a mason himself. He was so good that he was named "Best of the Guild"! At the same time, he took evening classes to become a master mason. He mostly taught himself architecture, but also studied at Hildesheim University and the London Architectural Association School of Architecture. He traveled a lot, visiting old monasteries, beautiful gardens in England, and places in Scandinavia. Since 1986, he has run his own design studio in Hannover, and since 2007, he also has one in Berlin.

Famous Buildings and Designs

Hansjörg Göritz designed Liechtenstein's state forum and parliament buildings. This was the first time in history that Liechtenstein had its own dedicated parliament building! For this amazing project, he won the international Brick Award in 2010. This award had previously been given to famous architects like Peter Zumthor.

He also designed a train station for the Expo 2000 event in Hannover, Germany. This station was built with special blue glass blocks and blue concrete to match the colors of the German railway company. It connected the airport to the Expo fairgrounds. This project was even shown at a big art and architecture event in Venice, Italy, in 1996.

Teaching and Professional Life

Hansjörg Göritz has shared his knowledge by teaching architecture at several universities. He was a visiting professor at Hildesheim University from 1995 to 1997, and a professor at Dortmund University from 1999 to 2001. Since 2007, he has been a professor at the University of Tennessee, College of Architecture and Design, in Knoxville, Tennessee.

He often gives talks around the world and has been a guest critic at top schools like Yale. He also helps guide young architects and is part of important groups like the German Association of Architects (BDA) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He has also contributed to international journals and committees, sharing his ideas about architecture.
