Hanzala Shaheed Malik (born November 26, 1956 – died December 14, 2023) was a Scottish politician. He was a member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Glasgow region from 2011 until 2016. He was a member of the Scottish Labour Party.
Early Life and Education
Hanzala Malik was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on November 26, 1956. His father was from Pakistan, and his mother was Scottish.
He attended the University of Paisley. There, he earned a degree in Computing with Business Administration. Before becoming a politician, he worked in different jobs. He was a police special constable and also served in the Territorial Army.
Political Career
Hanzala Malik started his political journey as a local councillor. He was a Glasgow City Councillor for the Hillhead area. He served from 1995 to 2007. After that, he continued as a councillor for the larger Hillhead ward from 2007 to 2012.
As a councillor, Malik was part of many important council groups. These groups dealt with things like education, city development, money matters, housing, and local rules.
In 2011, Malik was elected as a Labour MSP for the Glasgow region. This meant he became a member of the Scottish Parliament. He served in this role until May 2016.
After his time as an MSP, he was re-elected as a Glasgow City councillor in May 2017. He again represented the Hillhead area.
Personal Life
Hanzala Malik was of mixed heritage. His father was born in Pakistan, and his mother was born in Scotland. He was married for over thirty years. He had two children and two grandchildren.
