From Short Films to Hollywood
Harald Zwart was born in the Netherlands but grew up in Fredrikstad, a city in Norway. His love for filmmaking started at a very young age. By the time he was eight years old, he was already creating his own short films.
To turn his passion into a career, Zwart studied at the Dutch Film Academy in Amsterdam. His student film, Gabriel's Surprise, was so good that it won awards and was even shown on television. This early success helped launch his professional journey in the film industry.
Career as a Director
Zwart has directed many different types of movies, from action-comedies to family films. A film director is like the captain of a ship, guiding the actors and the crew to bring a story to life on screen.
Famous Films
Zwart made his mark in Hollywood with several well-known movies. In 2003, he directed the spy-comedy Agent Cody Banks, about a teenage CIA agent. He later directed the sequel to a famous comedy series, The Pink Panther 2, in 2009.
One of his biggest hits was The Karate Kid in 2010, starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. This movie was a new version of a classic 1984 film. In 2013, he directed the fantasy adventure The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, based on a popular book series. He also directed the Norwegian war film The 12th Man in 2017.
Other Work in Film and TV
Besides directing, Zwart has also worked as a producer and writer. A producer helps manage the business side of a film, like funding and scheduling. A writer creates the story and script.
He has produced several Norwegian films, including the adventure movie Kon-Tiki and the animated-style movie Troll. He also directed and wrote for the Norwegian TV series Oljefondet.
Music Videos
Zwart has also directed music videos for the famous Norwegian band A-ha. He worked on their songs Velvet and Forever Not Yours. He also directed a video for Morten Harket, the lead singer of A-ha.
