The Hardman IOOF Lodge Hall is a special historic building in the ghost town of Hardman, Oregon. It's also known as the Hardman Community Center or the Lone Balm Lodge #82. This building was finished in 1900. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012 because of its importance.

What Does the Hardman Lodge Look Like?

This building has two stories. It stands on a strong stone foundation. The main part is made of wood. It has a "false front" that makes it look taller than it is. The building also features Italianate details, which means it has fancy designs popular in the late 1800s.

In 1946, a big change happened. A one-story dining room and kitchen were added to the side. The first floor of the building is about 3,300 square feet. The second floor is about 1,980 square feet. There was also a woodshed and an outhouse on the property, but they don't work anymore.

Who Used the Hardman Lodge?

The Hardman IOOF Lodge Hall was home to two important groups. One was the Lone Balm Lodge #82 of the International Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF). The other was the Mistletoe Rebekah Lodge #25. These groups started meeting here in 1900.

David N. Hardman, who the town is named after, was a leader of the Lone Balm Lodge. This was even before the building was constructed.

A Community Hub

Over the years, the Hardman IOOF Lodge Hall was a busy place. It was a social center where people gathered. It also served as a concert hall and a dance hall. Merchants rented space on the first floor. They ran a general store and other businesses there. The last business closed in 1968.

The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs were like other secret societies of their time. They formed groups to help people in need. This was important because there weren't many government social services back then. In 1964, the Lone Balm Lodge joined with another lodge in Heppner. After that, they stopped meeting in Hardman.
