Harilal Upadhyay (Gujarati: હરિલાલ ઉપાધ્યાય) was a famous writer and poet from Gujarat, India. He wrote over 100 books, including many exciting historical novels and stories for children. He was also known as an astrologer.

Life of Harilal Upadhyay
Harilal Upadhyay was born on January 22, 1916. His birthplace was Mota Khijadiya village, near Rajkot, India. His father was a priest. Harilal went to school in Paddhari and later studied in Jamnagar. There, he learned a lot about old traditions and texts.
Early Writing Days
Harilal started writing poems when he was very young. At just 13 years old, he shared one of his poems in public. His first short story, "Hridaypalto," was published when he was 15. He loved listening to traditional storytellers and folk tales. These stories inspired him a lot.
He also met Vajubhai Shulka, who was an activist for India's freedom. Harilal learned about politics and wrote a long poem called "Tanya." This poem led him to meet Amritlal Sheth, a famous journalist in Bombay.
Moving to Bombay and Later Life
Harilal moved to Bombay and published his first collection of short stories, Jeevanchhaya. This was encouraged by K. M. Munshi, another well-known writer. Later, Harilal moved back to Paddhari and kept writing from there. He passed away on January 15, 1994, in Paddhari, Gujarat.

Historical Novels
He wrote many historical novels that take readers back in time.

- His Chandravansh/Gujarat series explores the history of Gujarat. Some titles are Lakho Fulani and Navanagar Na Narbanka.
- He also wrote about the history of Modh Brahmins in books like Otrada Vayara Utho Utho.
- He wrote seven books based on the ancient Indian epic, Mahabharata. These books explore different parts of the epic story, such as Bhishma Pratigna and Kurukshetra.
