Harita Kaur Deol facts for kids
Harita Kaur Deol (born in 1972 – died on 25 December 1996) was a brave pilot in the Indian Air Force (IAF). She made history by becoming the very first woman pilot in the IAF to fly a plane all by herself. This amazing solo flight happened on 2 September 1994, when she was just 22 years old.
A Pioneer Pilot
Harita Kaur Deol was born in Chandigarh, a city in India. She joined the Indian Air Force in 1992. This was a special year because, for the first time ever, the Air Force offered jobs for women pilots. Harita was one of the eight women chosen for this new opportunity.
Making History in the Sky
When Harita made her solo flight, she was flying an Avro aircraft. This type of plane is used for transport and training. She successfully landed the plane at the Yelahanka Air Force Station, which is close to Bangalore.
After Harita's historic flight, two other women, Flight Cadets Archana Kapoor and Bindu Sebastian, also completed their solo flights on the Avro aircraft. While there had been other female pilots in India before, Harita was the first woman to fly solo for the Air Force itself. This was a huge step forward for women in the military.
A Sad Loss
Sadly, Harita Kaur Deol passed away in an air crash in 1996. Her pioneering spirit and courage continue to inspire many young people, especially girls, who dream of flying.
