The Harman River is a beautiful river located in New Zealand. It begins high up in the Southern Alps, specifically in the Browning Range. As it flows, it eventually joins another river called the Arahura River. The Arahura River then carries its waters all the way to the Tasman Sea, which is part of the Pacific Ocean, just north of a town called Hokitika.

Where the Harman River Flows

The Harman River starts its journey in the rugged Southern Alps. These mountains are very tall and impressive! The river's source is in a specific part of these mountains known as the Browning Range. From there, the water travels downhill, joining other small streams and growing bigger.

Eventually, the Harman River flows into the Arahura River. The Arahura River is much larger and continues its path towards the coast. It finally empties into the Tasman Sea, which is the body of water between New Zealand and Australia. This happens near the town of Hokitika on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island.

How the Harman River Got its Name

The Harman River is named after a person named R.J.S. Harman. He was a surveyor from the Canterbury region of New Zealand. Surveyors are people who measure and map out land.

In 1865, R.J.S. Harman discovered a nearby mountain pass, which is a path through mountains, and it was named Harman Pass after him. The river flowing through this area was also given his name to honor his discovery and work in the region.

Visiting the Harman River

If you are an adventurous hiker, you can reach the Harman River on foot. There is a special path called the Styx valley track that leads to the river. This track allows people to explore the beautiful natural surroundings of the area. It's a great way to see the river and the stunning landscapes of the Southern Alps.
