Harold Avery (1867–1943) was an English author who wrote many books for children. He is best known for his exciting school stories and adventure tales.

Early Life and Family

Harold Avery was born on April 13, 1867, in Headless Cross, near Redditch, England. His full name was Charles Harold Avery. His father, William Avery, owned a company called W. Avery & Son. This company made needles, pins, and needle cases. Harold's mother was Marie Proctor Dingley. He had one older brother named Benjamin.

Harold went to school at Compton Place Road New College in Eastbourne, Sussex. After finishing his studies, he started working with his father, helping to make needles.

Marriage and Later Life

Harold Avery married Winifred Allen in Cornwall, England, on April 26, 1898. At the time of their marriage, Harold was already working as an author.

In 1899, Harold's father passed away. Harold and his brother Benjamin inherited money from their father. The brothers later sold their father's business.

Harold and Winifred moved to different places over the years. By 1907, they were living in Malvern, Worcestershire. Their only child, a son named William Harold Avery, was born there on October 10, 1907.

Winifred died in 1938. Harold Avery passed away on September 25, 1943, in Evesham, Worcestershire, at the age of 76. His son, William, was with him. William later became a retired bank manager and passed away in 1971.

Harold Avery wrote many books, especially school stories. These books were very popular with boys and girls in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They described what life was like in schools in England. He also wrote adventure books, sometimes featuring pirates. Harold Avery was a very busy writer, creating over 50 books in about 45 years.
