Harold Dieterle III was born on June 11, 1977, in West Babylon, New York. He is a famous American chef. He is best known for winning the very first season of the TV show Top Chef on the Bravo network.
After winning Top Chef, Harold Dieterle opened and managed three restaurants in New York City. These restaurants were called Perilla, Kin Shop, and The Marrow. He closed these restaurants in 2014 and 2015. In 2019, he opened a new restaurant named "Ten Hope" in Williamsburg, which closed in 2023. His special dish is spicy duck meatballs.

Early Life and Education
Harold Dieterle went to West Babylon High School. After high school, he studied cooking at the Culinary Institute of America. He finished his studies there in 1997.
Chef Career
Harold Dieterle started his professional cooking career at a restaurant called Della Femina in the Hamptons. He worked there for two years. After that, he spent three years at Red Bar and two years at 1770 House, both in New York City. For almost five years, he worked as a sous-chef (which is like a second-in-command chef) at The Harrison restaurant in New York.
Winning Top Chef
In October 2005, Harold Dieterle joined a cooking competition called Top Chef. He won the first season of the show! After his big win, he left The Harrison in early 2006. He wanted to plan and open his own restaurant.
Opening Restaurants
His first restaurant, Perilla, opened in May 2007 in New York City. In 2010, he opened another restaurant called Kin Shop, which served Thai food. A food critic named Adam Platt wrote a good review of Kin Shop in New York magazine in 2010. He called Dieterle "the original (and easily most talented) winner" of Top Chef.
In 2012, Harold Dieterle opened his third restaurant in New York City, named The Marrow. This restaurant mixed Italian and German cooking styles. It was a special tribute to his German family background and his wife's Italian family.
The Marrow closed in 2014, after being open for less than two years. In late 2015, Harold Dieterle closed his other two restaurants, Kin Shop and Perilla. He said he was taking a break from the restaurant business.
In 2019, he helped open a new restaurant in Williamsburg called Ten Hope. He worked as a consulting chef, which means he helped create the menu. This restaurant closed in 2023. In 2024, a new restaurant named Il Totano opened in Manhattan. Harold Dieterle is the main chef there.
In 2016, Harold Dieterle also worked as a consultant for a TV show called Feed the Beast. The show was about a made-up restaurant.
Personal Life
On September 4, 2010, Harold Dieterle married Meredith Davies in Atlanta, Georgia. They first met in 2006 at a food and wine event in Aspen, Colorado. This was the summer after he won Top Chef.
