Harold Hairston grew up in Raleigh, West Virginia. Before he became a professional baseball player, he served his country during World War II. He was part of the United States Army Air Forces.

After his time in the military, Harold Hairston began his baseball career in the Negro Leagues. He made his first appearance in 1946 with the famous Homestead Grays team. He continued to play as a pitcher for the Grays in 1947.
