Harold A. Lockwood (born April 12, 1887 – died October 19, 1918) was an American actor. He worked in silent films, which were movies without sound. Harold was also a director and producer. He became one of the most popular stars of his time, especially in the 1910s. People called him a "matinee idol" because many fans loved watching him.

Early Life and Acting Career
Harold Lockwood was born in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up and went to school in Newark, New Jersey. After finishing school, he first worked in exporting. This means he helped send goods to other countries.
But Harold soon realized he did not like this job. He decided to become an actor instead. He started his acting career in vaudeville. Vaudeville was a type of live entertainment. It featured many different acts like comedy, music, and dance.
Joining Film Companies
In 1908, Harold Lockwood joined the Selig Company. By 1910, he was working for a group led by David Horsley. He appeared in short films, especially Westerns. Later, he worked for other big film companies. These included the New York Motion Picture Company and Famous Players Film Company.
Working with May Allison
While at Famous Players, Harold Lockwood starred with actress May Allison. Their first movie together was the 1915 romantic film David Harum. They made over twenty-three films together during the World War I era.
Harold and May became one of the first famous on-screen romantic duos. This means they were very popular as a movie couple. However, they were never a couple in real life.
Personal Life
On January 8, 1906, Harold Lockwood married Alma Jones. They had one son named Harold Lockwood Jr. His son also became an actor. Harold Jr. appeared in both silent and sound films. One of his early movies was Lilac Time in 1928.
Death
Harold Lockwood died on October 19, 1918. He was only 31 years old. He passed away from the Spanish influenza. This was a very serious flu that spread around the world.
He got sick while making his last film, Shadows of Suspicion (1919). Some parts of the movie had to be finished using another actor. This actor was filmed from behind to look like Harold. Lockwood's funeral was held on October 22. He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.
