A Look Back: Harries' Early Days
Around the year 1820, the very first mill was built in the area that would become Harries. Mills were super important back then! They helped grind grains like wheat into flour, which people used to make bread and other foods.
Later, a man named George W. Smith bought this mill property. Because of him, the place was sometimes called Smithville.
Many Names for One Place
Over the years, this community had many different names. Besides Harries and Smithville, people also called it Harries Station, Harriesville, Harshman, Harshmansville, and Harshmanville.
Why so many names? Often, these names came from important people who owned local mills or other businesses in the area, like the Harries family or the Harshman family.
The Post Office Story
A post office is where people send and receive mail. A post office called Harshmanville opened in 1850. This was a big deal because it connected the community to the rest of the world.
Later, in 1885, its name was shortened to Harshman. However, the post office eventually closed its doors in 1914.
Becoming Part of Riverside
Harries was originally located in a larger area called Mad River Township. In 1995, this township officially became a city known as Riverside. This means Harries is now a part of the modern city of Riverside.
