Harriet Lepel Phipps was an English lady who worked closely with Queen Victoria. She was born on January 22, 1841, and passed away on March 7, 1922. Harriet became a very trusted helper and friend to the Queen.

Early Life and Family

Harriet was the younger daughter of Sir Charles Beaumont Phipps. Her father was also a close helper and trusted friend to Queen Victoria. He had an important job called the Keeper of the Privy Purse, which meant he managed the Queen's personal money.

Working for Queen Victoria

Harriet began her service to the Queen on March 3, 1862. Her first role was as a Maid of Honour in Ordinary. This was a special assistant position to the Queen. This role also gave her a special social standing, similar to the daughter of a baron.

Later, in 1889, Harriet took on another important role. She became a Woman of the Bedchamber. In this position, she helped the Queen with her personal needs and was a close companion. She continued in this role until Queen Victoria's death in 1901.

A Trusted Confidante

Queen Victoria relied on Harriet Phipps for many important and private tasks. Harriet had access to many secrets of the royal court. She was known for being very loyal and always kept these secrets safe. After her death, all her personal papers were destroyed. This shows how much she valued the Queen's privacy.

Marie Mallet, another lady who worked for the Queen, described Harriet. She said that Harriet, when delivering instructions from the Queen, could seem a bit serious. However, Marie also said Harriet was "gay and excellent company" and "always warm-hearted."

Royal Recognition

For her loyal service, Harriet Phipps received a special award. She was given the Royal Order of Victoria and Albert, 4th class. This award was given by Queen Victoria herself to women who served her personally.

Legacy and Portrayals

A portrait of Harriet Phipps was painted in 1889 by the famous artist John Lavery. This painting can now be seen in the Glasgow Museums collection.

Harriet Phipps was also shown in the 2017 film Victoria & Abdul. In the movie, she was played by the actress Fenella Woolgar.
