Her Early Life

Harriette Smythies was born in Margate, Kent, England. She came from an important military family. Her parents were Jane Gordon and Edward Lesmoir Gordon. Her father was a Sergeant-at-Arms.

Harriette had four brothers and sisters. One of her sisters, named Jane, was known for giving money to good causes. Her brother, Edward, also became a Sergeant-at-Arms. He served at the special ceremony where Queen Victoria became queen in 1838.

Her Family and Writing

Harriette married Reverend William Yorick Smythies. She wrote many books, mostly novels. Her books were published by well-known companies like Richard Bentley and Hurst and Blackett. Sometimes, her books were published under the name "Mrs. Gordon Smythies."

Her stories often explored themes of love and marriage. Harriette was a very busy writer, publishing many books throughout her life.

Later Years

In 1871, Harriette's sister Jane passed away. Jane left most of her money to charity. Harriette lived separately from her husband for many years. She continued to write until her death in 1883.

Harriette and William had one child, a son named William Gordon Smythies. He became a lawyer and also a writer, just like his mother.
