Harris, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Harris is a small, historical place in Humboldt County, California, a beautiful area in California. It's known as a "locality," which means it's a specific spot on the map, not a big city or town. Harris used to have other names like Dogtown and Spruce Grove before it became known as Harris.

What is Harris?

Harris is a quiet spot located about 7 miles (11 km) west-southwest of another place called Alderpoint, California. It sits quite high up, at an elevation of about 2,238 feet (682 m) above sea level.

How Did Harris Get Its Name?

The name "Harris" honors a person named William C. Harris. He was the very first postmaster for the area. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office.

The Story of the Post Office

The post office for Harris first opened way back in 1882. Before that, it was located in a place called Dark Canyon, California. When it first opened, the Harris post office was about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) north of where the main part of Harris is today.

Later, in 1946, the post office moved closer to the main settlement. However, it eventually closed for good in 1974. Even though the post office is gone, the name Harris remains, reminding us of its history.
