About Harriët van Reek
Harriët van Reek was born in 1957. Her dad, Jan van Reek, was also a comic author. Harriët studied art for a short time at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. After that, she went to Amsterdam to become a teacher. She learned how to teach drawing and other hands-on skills.
In 1986, Harriët published her very first book. It was called De Avonturen van Lena Lena. Just one year later, she won a big award for it, the Gouden Griffel. This award is one of the most important prizes for children's books in the Netherlands. She also won the Vlag en Wimpel award for the pictures she drew in this book.
Since 1987, Harriët has worked a lot with another artist named Geerten Ten Bosch. They have created many cool projects together. These include books and even puppetry shows! They first worked on a children's magazine called St. Kitts van de Bovenwindse. The magazine only lasted a year, but it was the start of their teamwork. Harriët and Geerten formed an artist collective called Banketje. They made many artworks together. Some of their art was even bought by famous museums, like the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
Harriët kept winning awards for her amazing work. In 1990, she received the Vlag en Wimpel award for her book Het bergje spek. She also won the Zilveren Penseel award for Bokje in 2001. Later, in 2007, she won the Zilveren Penseel again for Letterdromen met Do.
In 2013, she released a book called Edith en Egon Schiele. This book was inspired by the life of an Austrian painter named Egon Schiele and his wife Edith. In 2016, Harriët won the Gouden Penseel for her book Lettersoep. She wrote Lettersoep to help kids enjoy writing by hand again. This is important because many kids now use phones and computers for communication.
