Making the Show: Behind the Scenes
The series was made by Avalon Television, which is Harry Hill's usual production team. It was shown on ITV between October 2005 and January 2006. Harry Hill worked with British comedian Dean Wilkinson to write the show.
Shark Infested Custard was first shown on CITV on Fridays at 4:30 pm. CITV is the children's programming block on the ITV Network. The show also starred Siobhan Hayes and Joann Condon.
The show's funny name comes from a well-known children's joke: "What's yellow and dangerous? Shark-infested custard!"
This show was a new adventure for Harry Hill. Before this, he had never created television shows specifically for children. To go along with the series, two books were released: Harry Hill's Whopping Great Joke Book and Harry Hill's Bumper Book of Bloopers.
Why the Show Ended
Harry Hill mentioned that thirteen episodes of the series were made. However, after only six episodes were shown, a repeat of the first episode aired. After that, no new episodes were broadcast. The show's official website was taken down, and nothing about it could be found on the CITV website.
Harry Hill himself shared that he was not happy with how the show was put together after filming. His website said the show would return in "Spring 06," but it never did.
What the Show Was About
Harry Hill's Shark Infested Custard was a lot like his earlier show, Harry Hill, which was on Channel 4. It featured many different sketches, funny running jokes, and musical performances.
One part of the show was called "Meet The Johnsons." In this segment, Harry would invite a family with the last name Johnson onto the show. There was also a game called "Help The Aged," which was similar to the old show Multi-Coloured Swap Shop.
The series also brought back some of Harry Hill's classic characters. These included Stouffer the Cat and Harry's "son from his first marriage," a ventriloquist doll named Garry Hill.
New characters were also introduced. These included Burly Caroline, Harry Hill Snr., Speed Camera Boy, a giant, and a musical "genius" named Evelynne Hussey. Just like his other shows, each episode of Shark Infested Custard ended with a song.
Show Summary
When the series first aired, this is how it was described:
Families named Johnson will come to climb Harold Hill. Famous people might struggle to be recognized. Natasha Kaplinsky, the tap-dancing Armadillo, will try to keep her title in Harry's ‘Pet Idol’ – can your pet challenge her?
This show was a chance to see bald men spell words and to be amazed by Evelynne's wonderful music. You could also try to find a friend for Speed Camera Boy! In the studio, hundreds of 8 to 11-year-olds would point out the woman with the annoying laugh. They would also banish vegetables that didn’t look like Harry. And if you had a Nan, she could also have 15 minutes of fame!
