Harry Locke (born December 10, 1913 – died September 7, 1987) was a well-known English character actor. A character actor is someone who often plays interesting, specific types of roles instead of the main hero or heroine.
Harry Locke was born and passed away in London, England. He was married twice, first to Joan Cowderoy in 1943, and later to Cordelia Sewell in 1952. He was also a close friend of the famous poet Dylan Thomas. Harry Locke even talked about their friendship in London and South Leigh, Oxfordshire, during an interview in the 1970s.
Harry Locke's Acting Career
Harry Locke was a familiar face in British movies for over 30 years. He often played smaller parts, like everyday Londoners (called cockneys), working men, office clerks, porters, and taxi drivers. He appeared in many popular films, including Passport to Pimlico (1949), Reach for the Sky (1956), and Carry On Nurse (1959). He also acted in The Devil-Ship Pirates (1964), Alfie (1966), and The Family Way (1966).
Television Roles
Harry Locke also had many roles on television. In 1969, he played a night porter in the show Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased). In 1972, he took on the role of Platon Karataev in the BBC's TV version of War and Peace. His very last acting job was in 1977, when he played a gardener in an episode of Just William.
