Harry Corpening Martin (January 13, 1920 – May 3, 2015) was an important judge in North Carolina. He served as an associate justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court from 1982 to 1992. This is the highest court in the state. He was born in Lenoir, North Carolina.

Harry C. Martin was born in Lenoir, North Carolina, on January 13, 1920. He loved learning and went to the University of North Carolina. There, he earned a degree in music. After his time in college, he decided to study law. He went to Harvard University and earned his law degree in 1948.

Serving His Country

Before becoming a lawyer, Harry Martin served in the United States Army Air Forces. This was during World War II, from 1942 to 1945. His service helped protect the country during a very important time in history.

A Career in Law and Justice

After finishing law school, Harry Martin started his own law practice. He worked as a private lawyer for several years. In 1962, he became a judge on the Superior Court of North Carolina. This court handles serious cases.

He continued to advance in his career as a judge. In 1978, he was appointed to the North Carolina Court of Appeals. This court reviews decisions made by lower courts. Just four years later, in 1982, he joined the North Carolina Supreme Court. He served on this top court until 1992, when he retired because of his age, as required by law.

Even after retiring from the North Carolina Supreme Court, he continued to serve. From 2000 to 2006, he was the chief justice of the Cherokee Supreme Court. This showed his ongoing dedication to justice.

Family Life and Later Years

Harry Martin married Nancy Dallam in 1955. They built a family together and raised three children. After his long and successful career, he and Nancy retired in Asheville, North Carolina. Harry Martin passed away in Asheville on May 3, 2015, at the age of 95.
