Harvey Newcomb (born September 2, 1803 – died August 30, 1863) was an American clergyman and a very busy writer. He wrote many books, especially for young people.

Early Life and Work

Harvey Newcomb was born in Thetford, Vermont. When he was about 15 years old, in 1818, he moved to western New York. There, he worked as a teacher for eight years.

From 1826 to 1831, he became an editor for several newspapers and magazines. The last one he edited was called the Christian Herald.

A Life of Writing and Faith

For the next ten years, Harvey Newcomb spent his time writing and preparing books. Many of these books were for the American Sunday School Union. This organization creates educational materials for children.

In 1840, he became a licensed preacher. He then led a Congregational church in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. He also served as a pastor in other churches later on.

Editor and Author

Harvey Newcomb continued his work as an editor. In 1849, he was an editor for the Boston Traveller newspaper. From 1850 to 1851, he worked as an assistant editor for the New York Observer. During this time, he also preached at the Park Street mission church in Brooklyn, New York. In 1859, he became the pastor of a church in Hancock, Pennsylvania.

He wrote regularly for several publications. These included the Boston Recorder and a popular magazine for young people called the Youth's Companion. He also wrote for other religious magazines.

Books for Young Readers

Harvey Newcomb was an incredibly productive writer. He wrote a total of 178 books! Most of these books were for children and young adults.

Some of his well-known books include:

  • Young Lady's Guide (published in 1839)
  • How to be a Man (published in 1846)
  • How to be a Lady (also published in 1846)

He also wrote a book about world missions called Cyclopedia of Missions (1854). Another important work was Manners and Customs of the North American Indians (1835).

Harvey Newcomb passed away in Brooklyn, New York, in 1863.
