The Story of Hatching Pete
Pete Ivey (Jason Dolley) is a shy teenager. His best friend, Cleatus Poole (Mitchel Musso), is the mascot for their school, Brewster High. The mascot is a chicken!
Pete is a bit sad because his crush, Cammie Poole, is already going out with someone else. Pete's dad tells him he needs to do something to get noticed.
One day, Cleatus asks Pete for a big favor. Cleatus is allergic to the chicken mascot suit! He sneezes a lot when he wears it. So, he asks Pete to wear the suit instead. Cleatus promises to help Pete get a date with his sister, Cammie. Pete agrees.
At first, Pete is nervous in the suit. But then he realizes he's getting Cammie's attention. He starts to act really wild and funny inside the suit. The next day, everyone congratulates Cleatus on "his" amazing mascot performance. Cleatus asks Pete what he did. Pete can't really explain, so Cleatus decides Pete should keep being the chicken. Cleatus will just pretend to be the mascot while Pete does the actual work. Pete agrees to be "The Chicken" full-time.
Later, Pete meets Angela Morrisey (Josie Loren), a cheerleader, in biology class. He starts to like her. They both get chosen to work on the school's parade float. As they work together, they become good friends.
On the day of the parade, "The Chicken" is a huge hit! Everyone loves the mascot. During a dance, Cleatus, who is dressed up as Pecos Bill, is accidentally seen. People realize he's not the chicken. Pete, still in the suit, quickly leaves the crowd. He even borrows the sheriff's car to get away!
Soon after, Angela sees Pete walking and offers him a ride. They talk, and Angela says she's happy that Cleatus isn't "The Chicken." She says she's starting to have feelings for whoever is inside the suit. Pete thinks about telling her the truth. But Angela also says she's not sure how finding out who it is might change her feelings. So, Pete decides to keep his identity a secret and stops being the mascot for a while.
The town loves "The Chicken" so much! More people come to the games because of the mascot. The sheriff decides not to charge Pete for taking the car. The principal and coach even hold a meeting to tell "The Chicken" that there will be no trouble if he comes back.
But "The Chicken" doesn't show up for the next game. A local reporter gives "The Chicken" a chance to explain on TV. "The Chicken" says that the magic might be gone, like when the Lone Ranger's identity was revealed. At this moment, Angela realizes that Pete is "The Chicken." But she doesn't say anything.
Pete does return for the final game! He helps cheer on the players and the crowd. With "The Chicken" back, the team starts playing much better. During a break, the audience cheers for "The Chicken" to take off his head. Pete decides to do it! The team wins the game at the last second. When the cheerleaders celebrate, Angela falls on Pete. They share a kiss! But Cleatus interrupts them, telling Pete to put his chicken head back on and celebrate with the team. It was the Brewster Roosters' only win of the year!
