Haumont-près-Samogneux facts for kids
Haumont-près-Samogneux is a special kind of town in France. It is located in the Meuse department, which is in the northeast part of the country, in a region called Grand Est.
A Town Without People
Since the end of a big battle in 1916, no one has lived in Haumont-près-Samogneux. This battle was called the Battle of Verdun. Because of this, the town officially has zero people living there.
There are other towns nearby that also have no residents. These include Bezonvaux, Beaumont-en-Verdunois, Louvemont-Côte-du-Poivre, Cumières-le-Mort-Homme, and Fleury-devant-Douaumont.
History of Haumont-près-Samogneux
During the war, Haumont-près-Samogneux was completely destroyed. The land was so badly damaged that it was very difficult for people to live there again. Because of this, the town was never rebuilt.
The area where the town once stood is kept as it was. This helps people remember how violent the war was. Haumont-près-Samogneux is officially known as a "village that died for France." This means it was destroyed and lost its people during the war.
Even though no one lives there, the town still has a small local government. A group of three people manages the town. These people are chosen by a leader called the prefect of the Meuse department.
