Hayward Montague Davenport (1874–1959) was an English artist who painted pictures of ships and the sea. He was also a pharmacist, which means he worked with medicines. He is often called Hayward M. Davenport.

Who Was Hayward M. Davenport?

Hayward M. Davenport was born in 1874. He became known for his beautiful paintings of ships and ocean scenes. These types of paintings are called maritime art. He also had a career in the world of medicine.

His Early Art Career

Before 1901, Davenport painted many pictures for people who asked him to. Most of these paintings were for ship captains. They wanted him to paint their ships!

One of his most famous paintings is a large watercolour called Oak and Steel. This painting was shown at a very important art show called the Royal Academy of Arts in 1894. Another painting he showed there was A View of Hampton Court Palace.

A Famous Ship Painting

In 2002, one of his large paintings was sold at an auction. It was called H.M.S. "Ophir" leaving Portsmouth, March 15, 1901, with the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York on their historic 40,000 mile cruise of the Empire. This painting showed a famous ship leaving port for a long journey.

From Artist to Business Leader

In 1901, something big changed in Davenport's life. His grandfather, John Thistlewood Davenport, passed away. His grandfather had owned a company called J. T. Davenport & Sons. This company was based in London and made medicines.

After his grandfather's death, Hayward Davenport stopped painting. He took on a new role as the Chairman of J. T. Davenport & Sons. This meant he was in charge of the family's medicine business. The company was famous for selling a medicine called Dr. J. Collis Browne's Chlorodyne.

Hayward Montague Davenport passed away in 1959. He left behind a legacy as both a talented maritime painter and a successful business leader.
