The Hazelhurst Arts Centre is a cool place for art and creativity. It is located in Gymea, a suburb in southern Sydney, Australia. This centre was the first of its kind in Australia. It has a lot to offer, including art galleries, studios, and beautiful gardens.

Hazelhurst is built on a large area of land, about 1.4 hectares, which is like three football fields! It opened its doors on January 22, 2000. The buildings were designed by architects Michael Bennet, Esther, and Trevor Hayter. The lovely gardens were created by Oi Choong.

What You Can Find at Hazelhurst

Hazelhurst Arts Centre is a busy place with many different areas. It has two art galleries where you can see amazing artworks. There is also a small theatre, called a theatrette, for performances.

If you like to create art, there are art studios where classes and workshops are held. You can also find meeting rooms, a gift shop, and a café. The gardens are a peaceful place to relax and explore. People can also rent parts of Hazelhurst for special events.

History of Hazelhurst

The idea for Hazelhurst came from the Sutherland Shire Council. It was made possible by a special gift from Ben and Hazel Broadhurst. They wanted to create a place for art and culture.

The land for Hazelhurst was bought in 1945. A two-story cottage was built there with help from local architect Harry Smith. Today, this cottage is used by artists who come to stay and work at Hazelhurst. It is also a digital media studio.
