Hazlehead Park is a large public park in Aberdeen, Scotland. It covers 180 hectares, which is about the size of 300 football fields! This park opened to everyone in 1920. Before that, it was the private estate of Hazlehead House, owned by a shipbuilder named William Rose.
The park is very green with lots of trees and many paths for walking. It's a great place for outdoor activities. You can find football pitches, two golf courses, and a pitch and putt course here. There's even a horse-riding school!
Hazlehead Park also has a special collection of sculptures by different artists. One important sculpture is a memorial to those who died in the Piper Alpha disaster. The park also keeps old items from other parts of the city. Plus, it has Scotland's oldest maze, which was first planted in 1935.
In September 2007, Hazlehead Park hosted a big concert called Free 2007. It was organized by Northsound Radio and was one of the largest free outdoor events in Scotland. The park is also home to a Parkrun, which is a free, weekly 5k running event.
Enjoying Golf at Hazlehead Park
Hazlehead Park is a fantastic spot for golf lovers. It has two 18-hole golf courses and a fun pitch and putt course. These courses are open to everyone because they are owned by the public. You don't need a special handicap or any other restrictions to play here.
One of the 18-hole courses, known as the "Number 1 course," was designed by Alister MacKenzie. He is a very famous golf course architect who also designed the well-known Augusta National course in the United States.
Park Cafe: A Place to Relax
The park has its own cafe where visitors can grab a snack or a drink. This cafe was updated and reopened in 2013. It is run by the same company that operates the cafe at Duthie Park, another popular park in Aberdeen. Sadly, the cafe was badly damaged in a fire on December 11, 2020.
