Headquarters is a small, unincorporated community in Nicholas County, Kentucky, USA. This means it's a recognized place, but it doesn't have its own local government.
It is located where two main roads, Route 32 and Route 36, meet. This spot is northwest of Carlisle, which is the main town and county seat of Nicholas County. Headquarters sits about 958 feet (292 meters) above sea level.
History of Headquarters
Headquarters had its own post office for many years, from 1848 until 1906.
No one is completely sure how the community of Headquarters got its name. There are a few different ideas:
- Some people think the name comes from an old Native American word that was translated into English.
- Others believe it was named because it was an important trading spot or "headquarters" for early settlers.
- A third idea is that the name "Headquarters" actually came from "headwaters." This is because the community is located near where two small streams, Hooktown Branch and Wilbur Run, begin. These streams eventually flow into the South Fork of the Licking River.
