The Heal Family House is a really old and special home in Georgetown, Maine. You can find it on Maine State Route 127. This house was built around 1798, which makes it one of the few homes from that time still standing in this quiet area. For over 100 years, it was owned by the Heal family. Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Exploring the Heal Family House

The Heal House is located on a country road called Maine Route 127. It's about 1.2 miles (1.9 km) south of Robinhood Road. The house itself is on the west side of the road. However, it sits on a very large property. Most of this land, about 159 acres (64 ha), is on the east side of the road. This land was once used for farming and dairy cows. Now, most of it has grown back into a forest.

What Does the House Look Like?

The house is a two-and-a-half story building. It is made of wood and has a classic look. It has five sections across the front. The roof is pointed, and there is a chimney in the middle. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. The bottom part of the house is made of brick and stone.

The windows on the first floor have nine small panes over six larger ones. The windows on the second floor have six panes over six. All the windows have decorative molding around them. The main front door is in the center of the house. It has tall, thin columns on each side. Above the door, there is a small window and a decorative top part. A two-story section extends from the left side of the main house.

Inside the Heal House

The inside of the house has a common design for its time. When you enter, there is a narrow, winding staircase in the front hallway. To the right of the central chimney, you'll find the parlor, which is like a living room. The kitchen is located to the left of the chimney.

Who Lived in This Historic Home?

The Heal Family House was likely built in 1798 by William Heal. He probably worked as a farmer. This makes sense because the house is not right on the coast. His son, Washington Heal, later started a dairy farm on the property. He might have also run a mill that used the ocean's tides near Robinhood Cove. After Washington Heal passed away, the property was sold outside of the Heal family.
