The Healey Building is a famous skyscraper in Atlanta, Georgia. It stands tall at 57 Forsyth Street NW in the Fairlie-Poplar area. This impressive building was one of the last big skyscrapers built in Atlanta before World War I.
Building History and Design
The Healey Building was designed by the architecture firm Morgan & Dillon. They also got help from Walter T. Downing. The building was created in the Gothic Revival style. This means it looks a bit like old European castles or cathedrals.
The building has 16 stories and was constructed between 1913 and 1914. It was originally planned to be much larger. The idea was to have two towers facing each other. These towers would be connected by a large open space called an atrium. This huge design would have taken up an entire city block!
However, only the west tower was ever built. The east tower, which was supposed to be along Broad Street, was never started. This was because of World War I. Also, the owner, William T. Healey, passed away in 1920. He was the son of the original developer, Thomas G. Healey.
Landmark Status and Modern Use
The Healey Building stayed with the Healey family until 1972. It was recognized as an important historical site in 1977. On August 8, 1977, it was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history.
Since 1987, the building has also been a local landmark in Atlanta. This means the city protects its unique look and history.
In 2001, the top floors of the building were changed. They became condominiums, which are apartments that people own. The lower floors are still busy today. They have art galleries, shops, and restaurants for everyone to enjoy.
