Hearse facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A hearse is a special vehicle used to carry a coffin during a funeral. It transports the coffin from the place where the funeral service is held to the cemetery or crematorium. Hearses are often black or gray in color. They are usually driven by a funeral director or someone working for a funeral home.

What is a Hearse?

A hearse is a long car designed to carry a coffin safely and respectfully. It has a large space in the back for the coffin, often with rollers or a special platform to make it easier to load and unload. The windows in the back are usually tinted or covered to offer privacy.

Hearses are an important part of funeral traditions in many cultures. They help families and friends say their final goodbyes to someone who has passed away.

How Hearses are Used

During a funeral, the hearse leads the procession of cars to the burial or cremation site. This procession is a way for people to show their respect and accompany the deceased on their final journey. Sometimes, the hearse might also carry flowers or other tributes.

Types of Hearses

While most hearses today are motor vehicles, there have been many different types throughout history and around the world.

Motorized Hearses

Modern hearses are usually based on large cars or vans. They are often built by companies that specialize in converting regular vehicles into hearses. Some common car brands used for hearses include Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, and Holden.

Horse-Drawn Hearses

Before cars became common, hearses were pulled by horses. These were often elaborate carriages, sometimes decorated with carvings or plumes. Horse-drawn hearses are still used today for traditional funerals or for those who want a more historical feel.

Other Types of Hearses

In some places, or for special requests, you might see other types of hearses:

  • Motorcycle hearses: These are motorcycles with a special sidecar or trailer designed to carry a coffin.
  • Funeral trains: For very long distances or special occasions, trains have been used to transport coffins. A famous example is the funeral train for Sir Winston Churchill.
  • Bicycle hearses: In some environmentally friendly or urban areas, bicycles with trailers are used.

History of Hearses

The word "hearse" comes from an old French word meaning "harrow," which was a farming tool. In the Middle Ages, a "herse" was a frame placed over a coffin, often decorated with candles. Over time, this frame became more elaborate and was used to carry the coffin.

By the 17th century, hearses were horse-drawn carriages. They became more specialized and grand, especially for important people. As cars were invented, motor hearses began to appear in the early 20th century, slowly replacing horse-drawn ones. Today, the design of hearses continues to evolve, but their main purpose remains the same: to transport the deceased with dignity.
