Hecla is a small place in Hopkins County, Kentucky, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Sometimes, people called it Hechla.
What is Hecla?
Hecla started as a special kind of place called a company town. Imagine a town built just for the workers of one big business! That's what Hecla was. It was created for the people who worked at the Hecla Coal and Mining Company.
The Coal Mine's Beginning
The main reason Hecla existed was because of coal. The Hecla Coal and Mining Company opened its very first mine there in 1873. This mine provided jobs for many people and helped the community grow around it.
