A Look Back in Time
How Hedrick Started
The community of Hedrick began on July 31, 1881. Two local residents, Parmenas G. Smith and G. W. Compton, planned out the town. This process is called "platting." The very first house in Hedrick was built by John Hendricks. Soon after, Zarse & Ahrens opened the first store. A drug store, run by Frank Hartman, also opened. A school house was built in the early 1880s, showing the community was growing. Hedrick even had its own post office from January 14, 1880, until January 31, 1959.
The Big Storm of 1922
On April 17, 1922, a strong tornado hit Hedrick. The storm cut a path through the community that was about an eighth of a mile wide. Four residents of Hedrick lost their lives. The tornado destroyed six homes and ten businesses. Only three buildings in the community were left standing. Including people who lived nearby, a total of 11 people were killed and 35 were injured. After the storm, many people came to see the damage. Newspapers estimated that between ten and fifty thousand people visited. The governor even sent part of the state militia to help control the crowds and prevent theft.
Where is Hedrick?
Hedrick is located in a flat, open farmland area. It sits on the southern edge of Jordan Township. You can find it where County Roads 900 West and 100 South meet. The community is about 2 miles east of the Illinois border. It's also about 11 miles west of Williamsport, which is the county seat. State Road 28 is about 1.5 miles to the south. Before the town was founded, a wooded area called Hedrick's Grove was located east of a nearby stream called Redwood Creek.
