The Story of Heidi

Life in the Alps

Heidi is a young orphan girl. She lived for several years with her Aunt Dete. One day, Aunt Dete takes Heidi to live in the beautiful Swiss Alps. She will live with her elderly grandfather, Alpöhi.

At first, Alpöhi is known as a scary person who likes to be alone. But soon, he starts to love Heidi very much. Heidi quickly becomes friends with Peter, a boy who takes care of goats. He is a little older than her.

For the next few years, Heidi lives happily with her grandfather. She loves her life in the mountains. However, she really wants to go to school in the village. She wishes to learn with the other local children.

A New Home in Frankfurt

One day, Aunt Dete comes back unexpectedly. She tricks Heidi into leaving the Alps. Aunt Dete takes Heidi to Frankfurt, a big city. Heidi is meant to be a friend for a rich girl named Klara.

Klara (played by Isabelle Ottmann) cannot walk and uses a wheelchair. It seems she lost the use of her legs after her mother passed away. Klara's father loves her, but he is often away for work. Klara is left with her very strict governess, Fräulein Rottenmeier.

Heidi finds it hard to read and fit into city life. She struggles with the rules of polite society. But she and Klara become very close friends.

Heidi's Homesickness

Klara's father returns home. He surprises Klara with a visit from her grandmother. Klara's grandmother is very kind to Heidi. She encourages Heidi to learn how to read. Heidi starts to get better at reading and learning.

Even though Heidi is learning, Klara's grandmother notices that Heidi is sad. She tells Klara's father that Heidi is unhappy in Frankfurt. At first, Klara's father doesn't worry. He thinks Klara has been happy since Heidi arrived.

Soon, Heidi starts to miss her home in the mountains very much. She begins to sleepwalk around the house at night. This scares the house staff, who think she is a ghost. A doctor suggests that Heidi should go back to the Alps.

Klara's father agrees to send Heidi home. Klara is very upset. She feels like her only friend is leaving her.

Return to the Mountains

Heidi and Alpöhi are so happy to see each other again in the Alps. They quickly get back to their old life together. Alpöhi even lets Heidi go to school in the village. He buys a house in the village for them to live in during winter.

Heidi often writes letters to Klara. Klara feels bad about being angry when Heidi left. Soon, Klara's grandmother allows Klara to visit Heidi in the mountains. The two friends are very happy to be together again.

Peter, the goatherd, becomes jealous. He pushes Klara's wheelchair off a cliff. Alpöhi scolds Peter, and Peter immediately feels very sorry for what he did.

A Happy Ending

While playing with Heidi and Peter on the mountains, something amazing happens. Klara slowly starts to regain the use of her legs. When her father and grandmother come to take her home, Klara shows them she can walk again! Her father cries with joy. He is so thankful to Heidi and Alpöhi for taking such good care of his daughter.

Before Klara's grandmother leaves, she gives Heidi a special gift. It is a notebook. She wants to encourage Heidi's dream of becoming a writer. Both families stay good friends and keep in touch.
