Heidi Bucher (1926–1993) was a talented artist from Switzerland. She loved to explore how our bodies fit into the spaces around us. Her art often looked at private places, like homes, and how they connect to our personal feelings.

Heidi Bucher was born in Winterthur, Switzerland. She studied art at the School for the Applied Arts in Zürich. Her work often focused on themes like our bodies, our homes, and shared experiences.

Early Artworks

Heidi Bucher's first artworks mostly focused on the human body. In the early 1970s, she moved to Los Angeles, USA. There, she worked with her husband, Carl Bucher.

They created unique pieces called Landings to Wear and Bodyshells. These were large, soft sculptures that people could actually wear! They were so big that they blurred the line between clothing and art. These amazing works even appeared on the cover of Harper's Bazaar magazine.

A short film from that time shows the huge foam "Bodyshells" moving around on Venice Beach. These artworks were shown in exhibitions at important places like the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York City and LACMA in California.

Later Artworks

Later in her career, Bucher became more interested in how our bodies relate to the spaces we live in. In the mid-1970s, she started a new and exciting way of making art.

She would soak gauze sheets in liquid latex rubber. Then, she would press these sheets onto the inside surfaces of rooms. For example, she used this method in her grandparents' house in Winterthur.

Once the latex dried, she would carefully peel off the sheets. This created thin, skin-like casts of the rooms. She called these special casts "Skinnings." It was like taking the skin off a room!

Her unique art was recognized internationally. In 2017, she was chosen to be part of a major art show called VIVA ARTE VIVA at the 57th Venice Biennale. This is a very important art exhibition that happens every two years in Venice, Italy.
