Heket: The Egyptian Frog Goddess
Heket was an important goddess in ancient Egyptian religion. She was linked to the creation of life and the birth of children. People believed she helped with the flooding of the Nile River. This flood was very important for farming and bringing new life to the land.
Heket's Role in Birth and Life
Heket was especially important during childbirth. She was thought to breathe life into new babies. Many ancient Egyptians wore amulets (charms) of frogs. They hoped these would bring good luck and protect mothers and babies. Priests and midwives often honored Heket. They believed she was present at every birth.
Why a Frog?
The frog was a powerful symbol in ancient Egypt. Frogs appeared in huge numbers after the annual flooding of the Nile. This flooding brought fertile soil and allowed crops to grow. Because of this, frogs became symbols of new life, fertility, and rebirth. Heket's frog form showed her connection to these important ideas. She represented the fresh start that came with the Nile's waters.
