Helen Spottiswoode was born in Bengal, India. Her parents were Arthur Cole Spottiswoode and Jessy Eliza Loveday. In 1856, she married Thomas Black. He was a captain and manager for a shipping company called P&O.

Helping Others in Southampton

In 1872, Helen started a special hospital in Southampton. It was called St Mary’s Cottage Hospital. This hospital was a charity, meaning it helped people for free or at a very low cost. It focused on helping people with problems in their legs.

Becoming a Journalist in London

After her husband passed away in 1879, Helen moved to London. There, she began working as a journalist. A journalist writes for newspapers, magazines, or online publications.
