Helen Mary Wily (born Harrison, 27 April 1921 – 12 September 2009) was an important New Zealand statistician and mathematician. A statistician is someone who works with numbers and data to understand things. A mathematician studies numbers, shapes, and patterns.

Helen Wily was a strong supporter of equal pay. This means she believed men and women should earn the same money for doing the same job. She also worked with the New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women in Christchurch.

In 1988, Helen Wily received the Queen's Service Medal. This award recognized her helpful public services.

Helen Wily's Teaching Career

Helen Wily spent many years teaching mathematics. She first taught at Rangi Ruru Girls' School. This is a school for girls.

After that, she trained students to become math teachers. She did this for ten years at Christchurch College of Education. Later, she moved to the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology.

Working for Fair Statistics Education

Helen Wily also worked to make statistics education fair for everyone. In 1990, she helped lead the first session on gender issues in statistics education. She did this with Sharleen Forbes. This important meeting happened at the University of Otago.
